Viacom-Youtube Issue

Postby Neighborhood Studios on Tue Jul 08, 2008 3:15 pm

I just got a link to this from another forum user....but has anyone else heard about this issue? Basically it seems that Viacom is demanding that Youtube hand over the names and IP addresses of any user that clicked on and/or watched any video that included their shows or movies on Youtube. Additionally, now Viacom has access to your viewing habits, along with every video users have accessed on Youtube.

 What say you?

I think it is absolute BS. Not only did they ask for that, but they also asked for source code, which is absolutely ridiculous. Luckily, the judge shot that down.

There is nothing they can do to individual users, but it is still a ridiculously invasive breach of trust. When are these idiots going to understand that sites like youtube that only post snippets of material are beneficial. NBC understood that, and bought youtube. Piss people off enough, Viacom, and you are going to wind up with boxes of something at your door reminiscent of Jericho.

These old guys don't understand our generation and they think we will be okay with them pulling this, but we won't. We are a fiercely independent generation that is extremely wary of being watched.

If they win, I am more worried about what kind of precedent it sets for internet rights more so than being persecuted because it would be impossible for them to have repercussions for the individuals. They probably think youtube will get scared and make their copyright restrictions even stricter.

I hate youtube's copyright restrictions anyway. Very interesting video. Very frustrating. They are already making enough money, and it is not hurting them at all to have their material on other websites. It just gets them more power.

We are talking about a lot of IP addresses, millions, but it still gives them power over the people, and just limits us by infringing more copyright laws.

Whatever. I say we all get rich, buy Viacom out, and burn it.

That might be tough. I had no idea they controlled so much media!

Yeah, Viacom has been around for forever.

Before NBC purchased youtube, youtube didn't really make that much money, but it had the POTENTIAL to make a lot of money. Have you guys noticed those annoying ads that pop up WHILE you watch videos now?

It's a good thing NBC bought youtube, though, because if Viacom had sued beforehand, youtube would have had to fold. Now that NBC has it, it has A LOT more leverage.

I understand whole clips of material, but they will pull anything that has ANY copyrighted material such as fan clips and such. I made a X Men Last Stand trailer that was basically the already released trailer set to the Requiem for a Dream theme. I acknowledged that I didn't edit the trailer, just the sound mixing. It was pretty awesome how the music fit the trailer and it made it really badass. It garnished more than 60 comments and was even favorited 10 or so times. It still got yanked about 6 months later.

This guy has a point. Like he said, we don't know what we're watching 'til we watch it! This makes me mad that they are pointing fingers at milions of people when it's one company's fault for not steping up. Youtube needs to take responcability!

I know that Google Video has done something to prevent this in the past...when you upload videos, they don't come online for a few days because an actual person reviews the video to ensure that it isn't blatantly copyrighted material. Now that Google owns Youtube this might be the next step...?

If people come to our house then what? How would we defend ourself's then? I mean just incase they do start doing this, we Should be prepaired. Right? What would be the first thing apropriate out of our mouth to simply make them leave?

That's why Google Videos isn't nearly as popular. We are the "now" generation. We want it now. If I see a commercial on TV I thought was funny, I want to go to youtube and see it again immediately. Why would that possibly be a bad thing?

The networks should continue doing what they do and put all of their stuff on their channels, that way they get advertising kickbacks. All material that are not used artistically should be removed. Fan videos and parodies HELP networks, so those should not be removed.

Very true.

But you have to remember that they are a HUGE company, and would not waist their time on suing household dwellers. So I don't think that it is an issue with us either way.

What?! Where did this come from?

No one is going to come to your house and confiscate your computer because you viewed or uploaded a clip you saw on TV to Youtube!

Load up the shotgun and lock your doors and hide in the basement. J/K.

America won't allow something so extreme to happen. Don't worry!

Dude, they aren't going to do that. It's just like the music piracy...they don't come after the viewers/listeners, they go after the people who upload and do so for profit.

At any rate, they'd need a warrant just to enter your house. And think of the publicity it would get if Viacom got a court order to go into homes...and cracked down on all the 12 year olds who get their daily fix of cartoon network on Youtube...they would sink even lower in the public eye.
