U.N. effectiveness?

Postby Lone Wolf on Sun Sep 14, 2008 1:34 pm

I was doing an assignment for my MWP (modern world problems) class, and we had a assignment to grade the U.N.'s effectivness. We would either claim that the U.N. has failed, or succeded. I chose failure for the following reasons:

1:Yam kippur war: U.N. had a peace-keeping force between Eygpt and Israel, but did they do anything?nope.

2:Rwandan genocide: once again, the U.N. soldeirs were there, but could not stop the genocide (unless they were attacked by the hutus).

the U.N. could be a great tool against war and create peace, but the U.N. just does not have the power to do the things its supposed to do.

what do you guys think?

We definitely need a world police made up of all the nations, with the authority to act, but most 1st world countries would be against that, as it would limit their status as world powers.

1:Global police
2:defend human rights
3: manage trade

And that's precisely what the UN was created to do.

"The United Nations (UN) is an international organization whose stated aims are to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and achieving world peace."

However, overall the UN has succeeded in the fact that it has saved countless lives and bettered society for billions over the years - which is more than we can say for any country.

Exactly. So many people are deathly afraid of the term "world police". As a result, the UN doesn't get the backing it needs. There isn't any fear behind them--most countries mock them. Smaller countries don't like the UN because they know that whoever has the most money and power rules the UN anyway.

Without such a governing party, we remain divided. Divided, we as a race will be unable to resolve conflicts without violence and force.
