Awesome Foreign Movies

Postby rackfocus on Fri Jan 09, 2009 1:48 am

I consider the understanding of other cultures, an effort to learn foreign language, and an appreciation of foreign contributions (music, art, film, etc...) to be the pinnacle of intellect. I watch a lot of foreign movies, and a friend recently asked me for a list of good ones. I thought I'd post it here so if any of you want to watch more foreign films (or start watching them), you'd have a good list to start with.

Amelie
The Downfall (Der Untergang)
3 Iron
Apres Vous
Before the Fall
Black Book (Zwartboek)
The Counterfeiters (Die Falscher)
Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen)
The Chorus (Les Choristes)
Dear Frankie (little known Gerard Butler flick)
The Full Monty
Funny Games (German version, but the American version with Eli Roth is equally good)
Golden Door (Nuovomondo)
Good Bye Lenin!
Joyeux Noël
Love Me If You Dare (Jeux d'enfants) ***If you like the cinematography of Amelie, you'll LOVE this movie***
The Motorcycle Diaries
Nowhere in Africa
Oldboy
Pan's Labyrinth
The Orphanage
Devil's Backbone
Rabbit-Proof Fence
Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles
Shall We Dansu? (Remember the American version with Richard Gere? This is wayyyyy better)
Three Men and a Cradle (3 hommes et un couffin)
Nobody Knows
Walk on Water
Whale Rider
Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself
The Bicycle Thief/Thieves (Singular or Plural depends on who you talk to)
Respiro
Delicatessen
Go for Zucker
Mostly Martha
The Valet
Diabolique
The Grand Illusion
Monsieur Ibrahim
The Beat that My Heart Skipped
The Page Turner
Monsieur Klein
Battle Royale
CJ-7
Cinema Paradiso
Europa, Europa
Au Revoir Les Enfants
Persepolis
Central Station
M
Battleship Potemkin
Life is Beautiful

Well I've not seen any of those. Although I do understand many different cultures, speak two languages and do a lot with other foreign arts. So I guess I'm not entirely deficient in intellect by your standards.

And what on earth is Das Boot not on that list for?

Well if this is the list of movies no one knows about I feel a lot better:)

Although I have seen most of Pans Labyrinth and that one is pretty popular too. (least around here it is)
