I figured we could discuss a bit about Russia and Georgia since we are going to be hearing about it A LOT right now.

Firstly, some background info on it:

Okay, so if you aren't a nerdfighter yet, you should be. They are the most brilliant dudes on youtube. And John does a great job talking about Russia and Georgia as he applies peanut butter to his face.


What do you guys think? Should commonwealths be able to form their own nation independent of the host country without fear of violence? Or do you think that countries have the right to stop succession by force?

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

this is the first line to our declaration of inderpendence...yes i copy and pasted. BUT my point is that i think that under those circumstances like we did 200sumthing years ago that it is for the best when a country that knows what they want and what goals they can achieve as a country if it seperates.

bravo my italian mexican friend! :wink:
lol a lot of big words, a little over my head but i get what your saying. however, the country they are trying to secede from equally has the right to fight to keep them. thats what we did in the civil war. the south followed that first line of the independence and tried to secede and the north took their right to fight for them back....or something along those lines

Does Georgia have a legitimate reason to want to secede? I think that if they do (such as high taxes, no representation, loss of rights), then it would be acceptable, but if their reason for leaving is just because they want to, then that isn't enough. It's like if Utah wanted to leave the US for the heck of it - we wouldn't allow it!

Hmm. Interesting comments. I didn't watch the youtube video, but nerdfighters are brilliant. I just think about how ticked off China must be as they broke out in war right during the Olympics. Jeez. Could have waited a week, but no, lets start a battle on the same day of the most united event in the world, that only takes place every four years. Jeez.

yea but Russia isn't backing it up. they won't retreat and they held those 20 Georgian soldiers hostage. idk if they let them go yet...

They say they'll stay to their agreement to leave tomorrow, but realistically it seems it will take 10 days to retreat.

And then they've confiscated US property and won't return it...

In his Moscow briefing, General Nogovitsyn also took what seemed to be a swipe at the American military support for the Georgian Army while he was answering a question of what Russia would do with several captured Humvees bearing United States Marine Corps markings. The vehicles had been in Georgia for a military exercise this summer and were in Poti awaiting shipment to the United States when the war broke out.

“We have taken all this equipment to a certain place and are guarding it,” he said. “I don’t know what the fate of these Hummers will be. We don’t have time to think of such little details.”

He said some captured equipment might be “recycled” and added: “We’ll think what to do with it. It’s not our priority right now to give back vehicles to the U.S.”
