This was a great WWII thriller starring Tom Cruise...the plots of German conspirators to take down Hitler's corrupt government.

I'm very torn about this one. The plot seems great, and Tom Wilkinson and Kenneth Branagh? Damn. That's enough awesomeness right there.

But it pains me to see German characters with British and American accents. I don't think I saw a German actor in the bunch.

I will definitely get it through work when it comes out, but I think I will skip it in the theatres.

I thought it was excellent. I didn't worry about accents. I'd rather not have listen to Tom Cruise faking an accent. It was completely watchable without German accents.

Yes, but I think these American actors get off much too easily. Foreign actors such as Hugh Laurie, Hugh Jackman, etc... take great pains developing American accents for roles. I think it is kind of insulting that these big name actors bank on their names instead of their talent.

I'm sure that has validity, but I wouldn't put off watching a film for something that trivial. I saw the movie because it looked interested, not because of the actors. I rarely watch films, so I didn't recognize any of the actors save for Cruise, so you can't say I went for the talent or names.

I was intrigued by the story, nothing more, and with that I was perfectly entertained and enthralled by the film...which is the whole point of seeing a movie on the big screen! :D

You are a filmmaker that rarely watches films? That's like being a chef that rarely eats food.

I kinda agree... However watching to many other things kinda takes a lot out of your own idea, like the people who always make star wars fan films. If they didn't let star wars influence them so much they would be able to make a whole other movie they could call all their own.

Don't get me wrong! It is required of everyone to see star wars! lol

There is almost no such thing as an original idea when it comes to a plot. If you study enough film, you start to see the crossovers. Take Kill Bill for example. The whole "bride out for vengeance" was yanked from The Bride Wore Black, which is a French movie about a woman whose husband was killed right after they were married and she tracked down everyone involved in the killing.

So it's more like...if you know what has been done, you know if your thought is original or not.

Yeah there isn't a whole lot of "new ideas" but the combination of them is what makes great movie. Or taking an idea and looking at it from an angle that no one has looked at it from yet. That's where the real creativity is.
Those who believe it can't be done should not hinder the person doing it.

I didn't mean you HAVE to make your own original idea, but you should try not to let the other ideas influence your idea to much. I said both points of view had truth didn't I? If you knew me more, you would kinda rethink what you said about there being no such thing as new ideas. Because I have to think of them all the time as a writer, and video producer.

And I do totally agree that the proper accents would yield a much greater feeling of authenticity.

No, you don't. You have ideas, but they've already been had. You just shape them in a way that hasn't been done before*. Using the example of Kill Bill, that whole movie is borrowed ideas, but they are combined in a way that has never been done, like VIP mentioned.

**Of course you may have an original idea like a pink orangutan holds up a bank...but will it sell? So maybe more like a marketable original idea.

Who says these days new ideas are stupid like a pink hippo holding a bank...?
I mean really, by saying what you say puts down today's best minds, making them think "None of my ideas are original. What's the point of making anymore?"
God made us to constantly think, and tinker, he also gave us a piece of his creative abilities. So it's perfectly natural that we have original ideas. even in now day's idea filled society.

I only continue this argument because you are making it sound like it is impossible to come up with an original idea. If I am taking this wrong, then let me know if you believe it is very possible, and there's nothing for me to argue back at.

Find me a script idea that has been successful and is 90-100% original, and I will concede.
